Original WWII-era German Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW) envelope inspection/censor seal cut from an original mailed envelope.
The front bears a large circular “Oberkommando der Wehrmacht” marking surrounding the German military eagle and swastika, together with the printed word “Geöffnet” (“Opened”). These seals/labels were associated with wartime German military postal censorship and inspection, indicating that the correspondence had been opened for examination.
This example was cut directly from an envelope, leaving the original paper backing surrounding the inspection strip. The reverse retains period handwritten information, including what appears to read “Wallace Avenue, Bronx, N.Y.”, along with additional names/notations that are difficult to decipher.
A particularly interesting piece of original Third Reich postal history for collectors of WWII German censorship, Wehrmacht postal markings, military mail, Feldpost, and historical ephemera.
Condition: Original used condition with age toning, creasing, edge wear, small tears and staining as shown. This is an envelope cutout, not a complete envelope. Please examine all photographs carefully for condition and details.
Translation:
- Oberkommando der Wehrmacht — “High Command of the Armed Forces”
- Geöffnet — “Opened”
