1938 Sachsen am Werk Dresden Set of 2 Philatelic Postcards Special Cancels

Excellent matching pair of original 1938 German postal stationery postcards produced for the “Sachsen am Werk” (Saxony at Work) annual exhibition in Dresden and its special philatelic exhibition, “Die Sächsische Briefmarke” (The Saxon Postage Stamp).

Both cards are particularly attractive pieces of Third Reich-era German postal and philatelic history, featuring period exhibition artwork, imprinted postage, and large Dresden special commemorative cancellations dated 16 July 1938.

Card 1 – Sachsen am Werk Jahresschau 1938

Features the large exhibition design:

“Sachsen am Werk – Jahresschau 1938 in Dresden”

The printed text states that the annual exhibition ran 18 June through 18 September 1938 and advertises the special exhibition “Die Sächsische Briefmarke.”

The card bears an imprinted 6 Pfennig Deutsches Reich postal indicium and a striking Dresden exhibition cancellation.

Printed along the side is:

“Abgabepreis 15 Rpf. / Markenbild: Reichsautobahnbrücke bei Siebenlehn i. Sa.”

The stamp design depicts the Reichsautobahn bridge near Siebenlehn, Saxony.

Card 2 – Sachsen / Völkerschlachtdenkmal

The second card features the stylized crossed-swords Saxony design with the inscription:

“Sachsen – Das schöne und fleißige Grenzland”

Below is:

“Sachsen am Werk Dresden im Sommer 1938”

and again the special exhibition:

“Sonderausstellung ‘Die Sächsische Briefmarke’”

This card has an imprinted 5 Pfennig Deutsches Reich stamp depicting the Völkerschlachtdenkmal at Leipzig.

Side inscription:

“Abgabepreis 12 Rpf. / Markenbild: Völkerschlachtdenkmal bei Leipzig”

The lower text also references the 125th anniversary of the Battle of the Nations at Leipzig, October 1938.

Special Dresden Cancellations

A major feature of this pair is the bold DRESDEN 16.7.38 commemorative cancellation applied across each indicium.

The cancel incorporates an early Saxon “Drei Pfennige / Franco” stamp design and references the German collectors’ organization and the special exhibition “Die Sächsische Briefmarke.”

Both cards are addressed in period handwriting to the same recipient at Ungerer Nr. 58.

Condition

Very attractive vintage condition with normal age, handling, minor toning and wear consistent with original 1938 postal stationery. Both cancellations display especially well. Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition.
