Excellent original 1928 Austrian real-photo postcard showing a remarkable gathering of Imperial Austro-Hungarian Army veterans wearing their old ceremonial uniforms and plumed helmets at Wels, Upper Austria.
The reverse is particularly important because it is period annotated:
“Wels, 7.10.28.
Gedenktafelenthüllung für die gefallenen Vierer-Dragoner”
Translation:
“Wels, October 7, 1928.
Unveiling of the memorial plaque for the fallen men of the 4th Dragoons.”
This dating and identification appear to connect the photograph directly with the October 7, 1928 unveiling of the Dragonerdenkmal in Wels. Historical references identify the Wels monument as commemorating the Dragoner-Regiment Nr. 4, with the inscription honoring the regiment’s cavalrymen from 1637–1918; the monument was unveiled on October 7, 1928.
Photograph Details
The photograph captures an impressive group of former cavalrymen and veterans gathered for the ceremony. Several are wearing elaborate Imperial Austro-Hungarian military uniforms, including distinctive helmets with tall plumes.
Especially visible are:
- Numerous decorated military veterans
- Imperial Austro-Hungarian cavalry uniforms
- Elaborate plumed ceremonial helmets
- Medal bars and military decorations
- Veteran association members
- Large regimental/veterans flag
- Civilians gathered behind the veterans
- Excellent uniform and headgear detail
The photograph appears to have been taken during the ceremonies surrounding the memorial’s unveiling rather than being a later staged veterans portrait.
Historical Importance
The Dragoner-Regiment Nr. 4 had a long military tradition extending back centuries. The memorial erected at Wels specifically carried the dedication:
“Den tapferen Reitern des Dragonerregiments Nr. 4 1637–1918”
Translation:
“To the brave cavalrymen of Dragoon Regiment No. 4, 1637–1918.”
The monument was located in Wels’ Pollheimerpark and was designed by noted Austrian military artist Professor Ludwig Koch. Historical research specifically records its unveiling on October 7, 1928, the same date written on this photograph.
That exact date correspondence makes this photograph much more historically significant than an unidentified Austrian veterans image.
Reverse
The handwritten notation reads approximately:
“Wels, 7.10.28.
Gedenktafelenthüllung
für die gefallenen
Vierer-Dragoner
(Die Abordnung des letzten Kavallerie-Regiments mit Banner)”
The final parenthetical portion is somewhat difficult to read, but appears to identify the pictured delegation and its banner.
This is an excellent interwar Austrian military-history photograph, taken only ten years after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and showing former Imperial soldiers gathered to commemorate their fallen comrades.
