Original wartime issue of the Kölnische Zeitung / Stadt-Anzeiger, Morning Edition No. 365, dated Saturday, July 20, 1940. This is an especially interesting early-war newspaper published shortly after the German victory over France.
The dramatic front-page headline reads:
“Glänzende Heerschau des Erfolges”
Translation: “Brilliant Review/Display of Success”
The subheadline “Der Siegeszug unseres Freiheitskrieges” discusses the victorious campaign, while much of the issue is devoted to the military and political situation following the 1940 Western Campaign and the fall of France.
A particularly desirable feature is the front-page photograph captioned “Der Führer und der Reichsmarschall,” showing Adolf Hitler and Hermann Göring together. The front page also includes “Jubel um den Führer” and “Letzter Appell an die englische Vernunft” (“Last Appeal to English Reason”).
Inside is extensive coverage of Hitler’s Reichstag speech, including the large heading “Die Rede des Führers.” Another particularly significant section is “Ehrungen für Generale” (“Honors for Generals”), announcing Göring’s elevation to Reichsmarschall and listing major promotions within the Wehrmacht following the campaign in the West.
Other notable content visible throughout the issue includes:
- “Beförderungen in der Wehrmacht” – Promotions in the Armed Forces
- “Der Bundesgenosse Italien” – The Ally Italy
- “Die Heimatfront” – The Home Front
- “Die deutsche Aktion im Norden” – The German Action in the North
- “Der Krieg im Westen” – The War in the West
- Articles concerning Britain, France, Scandinavia and the continuing war
- Wartime photographs, including a decorated German soldier
- Period advertisements and extensive classified advertisements
- An interesting military death notice for Leutnant Ulrich Freiherr von Cramer, stating that he fell before the enemy at the Aisne on June 9, 1940, accompanied by an Iron Cross emblem
This appears to be the complete 8-page issue, as the newspaper itself states “Diese Ausgabe umfaßt 8 Seiten” (“This issue comprises 8 pages”).
A substantial original Third Reich newspaper with excellent display appeal and a particularly historically significant date, documenting Germany at the height of its military success in Western Europe during the summer of 1940.
Condition
Original period newspaper showing considerable age and use. There are edge tears, splits along folds, creasing, small losses, toning, staining/foxing and general brittleness, particularly around the outer edges and fold intersections. Despite the wear, the major headlines, photographs and most printed content remain clearly legible. Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition.
An excellent original piece for a collection of WWII German newspapers, Third Reich ephemera, 1940 Western Campaign material, Hitler/Göring material, or wartime propaganda and press history.
