Offered here is an interesting group of 11 vintage Third Reich Era black-and-white photographic prints, each measuring approximately 8″ x 6″. The photographs show historic German street scenes, architecture, businesses, churches, cobblestone roads, automobiles, streetcar tracks, pedestrians, and everyday city life.

These appear to depict Solingen, Germany, with several locations identified in handwritten German on the backs. Visible annotations include Grashof, Am Neumarkt, Johannisstraße, Kirchstraße, Auf dem Brunnen, Klosterwall, and other local streets/areas. Period references confirm that photographs of Solingen from approximately 1937 show many of these same named locations, including Neumarkt, Mühlenplätzchen, Alter Markt and Kölner Straße.

The images contain a wealth of period detail. Particularly interesting scenes include:

  • Kölner-Hof / Gastwirtschaft with streetcar tracks and period automobiles
  • Gasthaus Zum Goldenen Löwen with large Bräuhauser Köln advertising
  • Radio shops and other period storefront advertising
  • Busy commercial streets with pedestrians
  • Historic churches and church towers
  • Traditional slate-covered and half-timbered German buildings
  • Narrow cobblestone residential streets
  • Children playing in an alley
  • Period automobiles, delivery vehicles and streetcar infrastructure

The photographs are individually numbered along their lower margins, suggesting they may originally have formed part of a larger documented photographic series of the city.

A particularly interesting historical aspect is that portions of old Solingen were subsequently destroyed during WWII. One historical source specifically notes that the Kölner Hof on Mummstraße was destroyed in a 1944 bombing raid, making period views of this area especially interesting as records of the prewar cityscape.

The backs have period handwritten location identifications, an excellent feature for researching and identifying the individual views.

Condition

Very nice vintage condition overall with normal age-related toning, minor edge/corner wear and occasional small marks. Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition. All 11 prints shown are included.

An excellent original group for collectors of German photography, Solingen history, prewar architecture, street scenes, transportation, local history and European urban photography.
