Original WWII-era German death and funeral notice (Traueranzeige) for Otto Voigt, an Abteilungsleiter (department head) from Mülheim an der Ruhr, dated April 11, 1944.
The notice states that Otto Voigt passed away on Easter Monday after a severe and painful illness at the age of 63. It describes him as a beloved husband, caring father, faithful brother, brother-in-law and uncle.
An especially interesting wartime detail is the listing of his son:
“Obergefreiter Ernst Voigt, z. Z. im Felde”
Translation: “Corporal/Senior Private Ernst Voigt, currently in the field.”
This indicates that Otto Voigt’s son Ernst was actively serving with the German military in the field at the time of his father’s death, making this an interesting piece of German home-front and military family history from the final full year of WWII.
The notice gives locations including Mülheim (Ruhr)-Saarn, Wuppertal and Essen, with the family address at Kirdorfstraße 55. The funeral service was scheduled for April 13, 1944, at the Broich funeral hall, followed by burial on April 14 in W.-Unterbarmen.
Printed by the Mülheimer Zeitung, Mülheim (Ruhr). Attractive period black mourning-border format with traditional German Fraktur type.
Original period paper item showing normal age and storage wear, including the original horizontal fold and minor toning. Overall displays very nicely for an approximately 80-year-old document. See photographs for exact condition.
An excellent piece for a collection of WWII German documents, Wehrmacht family history, German home-front material, death notices and Third Reich-era paper ephemera.
