1936 Nazi German Reichsluftschutzbund RLB Sachsen Luftschutzschule Chemnitz Cover Air Protection

Original Third Reich-era Reichsluftschutzbund (RLB) official cover, mailed on 15 January 1936 from the Landesgruppe Land Sachsen e.V. – Landesgruppen Luftschutzschule in Chemnitz.

The Reichsluftschutzbund was Germany’s nationwide civil air-defense organization, responsible for educating and training civilians in air-raid precautions, fire protection, and self-protection. Its organization included regional Landesgruppen and an extensive system of Luftschutz schools for training personnel.

This is an especially attractive organizational cover because it retains the large printed RLB insignia and complete school address:

Reichsluftschutzbund
Landesgruppe Land Sachsen e.V.
Landesgruppen Luftschutzschule
Chemnitz, Schillerstraße 1
Fernsprecher 41114/15

The upper left features an excellent printed RLB starburst emblem with central RLB monogram and swastika, giving the cover a very distinctive period appearance.

The envelope was addressed:

An den Herrn Bürgermeister zu Röhrsdorf b/Chtz.
Translation: “To the Mayor at Röhrsdorf near Chemnitz.”

At upper right is a red Deutsches Reich 3-Pfennig postal meter/franking impression, together with a circular Chemnitz 15.1.36 postal marking. The large black “972” appears to be a contemporary administrative or routing number.

The sender is particularly interesting because this was not simply a local RLB office—the printed return address identifies it specifically as the Saxony regional air-defense school in Chemnitz. Contemporary sources confirm that the RLB operated dedicated Landesgruppenluftschutzschulen as part of its training structure.

Condition

Very nice original used condition for its age. Expected light toning, minor edge/corner wear and handling. The printed RLB insignia, Gothic-lettered return address, recipient information and postal markings remain exceptionally clear. Pencil notation “972” is also present at left.

A strong piece of prewar German civil-defense postal history, particularly desirable for an RLB, Luftschutz, Saxony, Chemnitz, postal-history, or Third Reich organizational collection.
