Offered here is a beautiful rare  antique German steel engraving depicting the tomb monument of Prussian Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher at Krieblowitz, presented in its old folding display mount with a removable cellophane protective window.

The caption beneath the engraving reads:

“Blüchers Grabmal zu Krieblowitz.”
“Blücher’s Tomb Monument at Krieblowitz.”

The finely detailed engraving shows Blücher’s monumental tomb surrounded by trees, with several small figures standing before the structure. The cylindrical upper portion of the monument includes a portrait medallion of Blücher. The exceptionally fine line work throughout the architecture, trees, landscape and figures gives the print the classic appearance of a 19th-century steel engraving.

A small engraver/printer credit is visible immediately above the title.

Historical Subject

Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher (1742–1819) was one of Prussia’s most celebrated military commanders of the Napoleonic era. He is particularly remembered for commanding the Prussian army during the Waterloo Campaign of 1815, where the arrival of his forces played a decisive role in the defeat of Napoleon.

Blücher was buried at his estate at Krieblowitz in Silesia (present-day Krobielowice, Poland). The monumental tomb depicted in this engraving was constructed as a memorial to the famous Prussian field marshal.

Unusual Original Presentation

What makes this example especially attractive is its surviving old mounted presentation.

The engraving is attached within a large folding paper/card mount. Above it is a transparent cellophane protective window/flap. The cellophane can be lifted or moved away, allowing the engraving to be viewed and displayed unobstructed while still retaining the original protective presentation.

The print itself measures approximately 10½–11 inches wide overall, based upon the ruler shown in the photographs. The complete folded mount is substantially larger.

The reverse of the mounted print is largely blank with a later handwritten inventory notation.

Condition

The engraving itself displays very nicely with strong detail and contrast. There is expected age toning, occasional spotting and minor handling wear. The surrounding mount shows age, folds, edge/corner wear and remnants of old mounting material. The transparent cellophane window shows age and wrinkling but remains with the piece and can be moved away from the engraving for display.

Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition, dimensions and construction. The complete mounted engraving with its cellophane window shown in the photographs is included.

An attractive piece of 19th-century German and Prussian military history, and an especially nice display item for a collection devoted to Blücher, Waterloo, the Napoleonic Wars, Prussia, antique engravings or historic German monuments.
