Original 1943 German NSDAP assistance document issued to a civilian family displaced by Allied bombing, an interesting piece of WWII German home-front history directly connected with the air war over Hamburg.
The document is headed:
“NSDAP – Ortsgruppe Jeschau”
and titled:
“Betreuungskarte für Fliegergeschädigte”
“Assistance/Care Card for Air-Raid Victims”
The card was issued in Jeschau on August 1, 1943 to Willi Drachenkopf, his wife and two children, who are identified as having previously lived in Hamburg. The document specifically states that the family was required to leave their residence because of bomb damage (“Bombenschaden”).
This date is historically significant. The document was issued during the period of the devastating July–August 1943 Allied bombing campaign against Hamburg, commonly known as Operation Gomorrah, which left enormous sections of the city destroyed and displaced large numbers of civilians.
The printed instructions request that all government authorities and Party offices provide the family with support and advice. It further states that they were to receive preferential consideration when purchasing scarce goods (“Mangelware”), showing the practical assistance provided to civilians who had lost or been forced from their homes.
At lower left is a clearly struck NSDAP Ortsgruppe Jeschau official ink stamp incorporating the eagle and swastika. The document is also hand-signed by the issuing official at lower right.
An excellent primary-source document illustrating the civilian consequences of the Allied bombing campaign, evacuation of Hamburg residents, and the German wartime system established to assist Fliegergeschädigte—people whose homes and possessions had been affected by air raids.
