Rare Large 1923 German Student Corps Gathering Photo – IV. o. V. Pfingsten – Fraternity Swords Flags

Impressive original large-format German photograph dated Pfingsten (Pentecost) 1923, showing an enormous gathering of German student fraternity / Studentenverbindung members assembled in front of a monumental stone structure.

This is an exceptionally detailed image containing hundreds of participants. The front rows are filled with members wearing traditional Couleur and ceremonial student uniforms, including distinctive caps, colored sashes, high boots and white gloves. Numerous men are holding student fencing swords/sabers, while an impressive array of large fraternity standards and flags is displayed throughout the gathering.

The handwritten inscription along the bottom reads approximately:

“IV. o. V. 7. Pfingsten 1923”

The precise meaning of the abbreviated organizational notation warrants additional research, but the Pfingsten 1923 dating is clearly visible.

The sheer scale of the gathering is particularly striking. The photograph provides excellent detail of Weimar-era German student culture, fraternity dress, Couleur traditions, ceremonial edged weapons, flags and insignia during the turbulent early 1920s.

This is also a very large photograph, measuring approximately 10½ inches wide based on the ruler shown, substantially larger than the typical German snapshot or postcard photograph of the period.

The reverse is blank with no visible photographer’s marking.
