Interesting original WWII German Generalgouvernement occupation postage stamp group from German-occupied Poland, featuring a particularly attractive mixture of mint stamps, attached pairs with large sheet margins, an apparent designer/inscription margin, and a used 10 Złoty stamp on piece with a large Krakau special cancellation dated 28 February 1944.
The group includes several visually impressive Generalgouvernement issues, including:
- 50+50 Gr. August der Starke portrait pair with attached lower sheet margin. The margin bears “ENTWURF:” followed by a handwritten-style facsimile/signature inscription, making this a much more interesting positional piece than two ordinary singles.
- 30+30 Gr. Hans von Bünau portrait pair with a very large attached upper sheet margin showing part of the printed “GENERALG…” sheet inscription.
- 10 Złoty architectural/castle issue on piece, clearly cancelled Krakau, 28 Februar 1944, with a large illustrated “10 Jahre …” commemorative/special cancel.
- 4 Złoty Generalgouvernement architectural issue.
- 10 Złoty Generalgouvernement castle/town issue.
- 12 on 12 Generalgouvernement overprint issue, with prominent German eagle and period emblem.
A strong specialist group for collectors of WWII German occupation stamps, General Government postal history, Poland occupation philately, sheet-margin varieties and Krakau cancellations.
The stamps appear generally well preserved with strong colors and attractive presentation. Mint stamps appear unused; gum and hinge status should be judged from the photographs unless otherwise stated. The cancelled 10 Złoty remains attached to its original paper piece.
