Unusual vintage copy of a very rare early German antisemitic propaganda poster-stamp sheet, titled:
“Aussprüche berühmter Männer über die Juden und ihre Bestrebungen gegen andere Völker und Rassen.”
Translation: “Statements of Famous Men About the Jews and Their Efforts Against Other Peoples and Races.”
The original sheet is documented as containing 40 individual propaganda stamps/seals and dating from early-20th-century Germany. An auction catalog devoted to antisemitism and Holocaust material illustrates this same design and describes the original as a sheet of 40 stamps; it notes that stamps of this general type were used on postcards during the early decades of the 20th century.
This example is being sold as an old vintage copy/reproduction of that scarce sheet, not as an original-period printing unless otherwise authenticated.
The sheet is particularly interesting because each perforated-style label attributes an anti-Jewish statement to a historical writer, philosopher, ruler, composer, politician or other prominent figure. The quotations themselves should be understood as historical propaganda material: the presence of a name beneath a quotation does not establish that the wording was genuinely written or spoken by that person.
People represented on the sheet
Among the names visible are:
- Otto von Bismarck – German statesman and first Chancellor of the German Empire.
- Graf Helmuth von Moltke – Prussian/German military commander.
- Napoleon I – Emperor of the French.
- Friedrich Schiller – German poet and playwright.
- Martin Luther – German theologian; several different quotations are attributed to him on the sheet.
- Josef Viktor von Scheffel – German poet and novelist.
- Prince Wilhelm of Prussia / Kaiser Wilhelm II – represented by a statement concerning the Berliner Tageblatt.
- Franz Liszt – Hungarian composer and pianist.
- Prof. Dr. Paul Förster – German educator and antisemitic political activist.
- Goethe – German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
- Herder – German philosopher and writer Johann Gottfried Herder.
- Eugen Dühring – German philosopher and writer.
- Édouard Drumont – French antisemitic writer and political agitator.
- Walter von Rathenau/Rathenow – attribution as printed on the sheet.
- Friedrich von Dingelstedt – German writer and theater administrator.
- Schenk Erasmus – attribution as printed.
- Wolfgang Menzel – German literary critic and writer.
- Prof. Wahrmund – likely associated with the Austrian academic Ludwig Wahrmund.
- Heinrich von Treitschke – German historian and political writer.
- Frederick the Great – King of Prussia.
- Graf Moltke – another quotation attributed to Moltke.
- Voltaire – French Enlightenment writer and philosopher.
- Tacitus – Roman historian.
- Ritter Georg von Schönerer – Austrian German-nationalist politician.
- Karl Julius Weber – German writer.
- Immanuel Kant – German philosopher.
- Maria Theresa – Habsburg ruler.
One of the most historically recognizable statements on the sheet is the Treitschke attribution “Die Juden sind unser Unglück!” (“The Jews are our misfortune”). That phrase can be traced to Treitschke’s 1879 writings during the Berlin Antisemitism Controversy; decades later it became closely associated with Der Stürmer. German History in Documents and Images
The sheet therefore provides an interesting example of how earlier writings and purported historical quotations were assembled into mass-produced political propaganda. Small adhesive political labels became an inexpensive means of spreading political and racial messages in Germany during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Evangelisch.de
