1942 Nazi German WWII Newspaper Sheet Staraja Russa Russia Winter Front War Artist

Original WWII-era German newspaper page/sheet, dated Friday, May 15, 1942, identified along the top as “Feldzeitung von der Maas bis an die Memel”, issue No. 467.

The most interesting side features the large illustrated wartime article:

“Das war Staraja Russa!”
“That Was Staraya Russa!”

with the subtitle:

“Als Kriegsmaler an der Winterfront südlich des Ilmensees”
“As a War Artist on the Winter Front south of Lake Ilmen.”

The article describes the experiences of a German war artist on the Eastern Front around Staraya Russa and Lake Ilmen, emphasizing the extreme winter conditions. The writer describes attempting to sketch outdoors in temperatures of approximately 20–40 degrees below freezing, having to repeatedly warm his hands, frozen fingers and feet, working in bunkers, and trying to capture scenes while under wartime conditions.

It is accompanied by numerous printed wartime illustrations showing German soldiers in winter clothing, horse-mounted troops, military vehicles, ruined and snow-covered Russian towns, civilians/refugees and winter landscapes. A portrait of the artist is also incorporated into the layout. The article is credited at the bottom to PK-Georg Vorhauer.

The reverse is particularly nice because it remains a complete newspaper page rather than a clipping. It includes numerous contemporary articles, columns, cartoons and puzzles. Visible headings include “Kundendienst in Amerika,” “Der zerknutschte Bratapfel,” “Der Schnarcher,” “Kein Chance für Hochstapler,” “Was wäre gewesen?” and “Der fromme Papagei.”

Historical Interest

This is a strong original piece of Eastern Front printed ephemera, particularly for collectors interested in:

Staraya Russa – Lake Ilmen – Eastern Front – German war correspondents – PK artists – winter warfare – field newspapers – wartime illustrations.

Staraya Russa and the Lake Ilmen region saw extensive fighting during the Eastern Front campaigns, making the combination of location, wartime date and contemporary illustrations especially interesting.

Condition

Original newspaper sheet with significant period folding from storage, age toning, wrinkles, edge wear and several small edge tears/nicks. Despite the thin wartime newsprint, the sheet remains substantially intact and the illustrations and text display well.

Please examine all photographs closely for exact condition. You will receive the exact original newspaper sheet shown.
