Royal Bulgarian Embassy
Military Attaché

Dear Comrade!

“I have the honor to most respectfully inform you that His Majesty Boris III, King of the Bulgarians, has awarded you the Bulgarian Commemorative Medal for the World War 1915–1918.

Enclosed I present to you the medal, together with the award certificate authorizing its wear, and express my most sincere wish that you may wear it for a long time in pleasant remembrance of Bulgaria and its people.

You are further informed that holders of the German Honor Cross of the World War are permitted to wear this medal without special authorization.

The wearing of the medal by persons who do not possess the German Honor Cross for Front Fighters or War Participants requires authorization from the appropriate German authorities in accordance with §5, paragraph 1c of the Law concerning Titles, Orders and Decorations of November 14, 1935.

With comradely greetings,

T. Ch. Damjanoff
Captain of the General Staff”

Historical Interest

This is an interesting Bulgarian-German military and diplomatic document connecting the reign of King Boris III of Bulgaria, Bulgarian WWI veteran awards, and German regulations governing foreign decorations.

The Bulgarian Commemorative Medal for the War of 1915–1918 was created for participants associated with Bulgaria’s service in World War I. This particular accompanying letter was intended for a German recipient and specifically references the German Ehrenkreuz des Weltkrieges (Honor Cross of the World War) and the German decorations law of 14 November 1935, placing the document in the pre-WWII/WWII-era period rather than WWI itself.

The original medal and individual award certificate mentioned in the text are not included unless shown separately; this listing is for the document shown in the photographs.

Condition

Original period paper document with considerable age and handling wear, including horizontal and vertical folds, edge wear, creasing, small tears and a more noticeable tear/damage along the right side. Please study the photographs carefully for exact condition.

A desirable piece for collectors of Bulgarian royal militaria, King Boris III material, WWI veteran awards, German-Bulgarian relations, military attaché documents and European medal paperwork.
