Original German military registration document dated 16 September 1939, issued in Lünen by:
“Der Oberbürgermeister als Ortspolizeibehörde”
The Lord Mayor acting as the Local Police Authority
The document was issued to Paul Böning, born 21 December 1911, and orders him to report to Adolf Hitler Plaza on 21 September 1939 at 8:00 a.m. to the municipal building for the creation of his Wehrstammblatt, the official military personnel/registration record.
This is an especially interesting document because it was issued only about two weeks after the beginning of WWII in Europe, as German authorities were rapidly expanding military registration.
The document specifically states that the order concerned the birth classes of 1911 and 1912. Contemporary records confirm that registration of these two birth years was ordered during September 1939, followed by their military examinations beginning in October. Archival holdings also specifically preserve 1939 Wehrstammkarten for the 1911 and 1912 birth classes, corroborating the purpose of this document.
Translation / Contents
The important central section translates approximately:
“On the basis of the Registration Ordinance of 15 February 1937 and the decree of the Reich Minister of the Interior of 9 September 1939 concerning the registration of the birth classes 1911 and 1912, you are hereby requested to report on 21 September 1939 at 8 o’clock at the municipal building, Adolf-Hitler-Platz 2, Room 2, for the preparation of the Wehrstammblatt.”
The recipient was instructed to bring:
a) Family register or birth certificate
b) Employment/work book
c) Two passport photographs, 37 x 52 mm, showing the individual in civilian clothing from the front
d) Documentation concerning membership in organizations including the SA or SS, possession of the Reich Sports Badge or SA Sports Badge, etc.
The final warning states that anyone failing to comply with the registration requirement could be punished with a fine of up to 150 Reichsmarks or imprisonment, and could also be forcibly brought before the authorities.
The nationwide character of this registration drive is well documented: contemporary notices from September 1939 likewise ordered men born in 1911 and 1912 to present themselves for military registration, while subsequent examinations of those classes followed in October and November 1939.
Official Lünen Seal
At lower left is a large official municipal/police stamp bearing the Lünen city arms, adding considerably to the visual appeal of the document.
The combination of the September 1939 date, named recipient, specific 1911/1912 mobilization-era registration order, Wehrstammblatt reference and official city seal makes this a particularly good early-war administrative document.
Condition
Original period document showing normal age and use, including several original folds, creasing, edge wear and light discoloration. The printing, recipient information, red date stamp and large official seal remain clearly visible. Reverse is essentially blank apart from bleed-through/impressions from the front.
A strong historical document illustrating the rapid expansion of German military registration immediately following the outbreak of WWII.
