Original WWII German Feldpost letter dated June 25, 1943, written by Oberfeldwebel Paul Dreisbach, with Feldpostnummer, to a woman named Doris.
This is an especially interesting wartime letter because Dreisbach discusses the Allied bombing of Wuppertal and Barmen, concern for Doris and her family, disruption of the mail caused by air raids, and the destruction she had apparently witnessed.
The letter is typewritten and personally signed “Dein Paul” (Your Paul) at the end.
English Translation / Content Highlights
He begins affectionately:
“My dear little Doris!”
Paul says he had expected to hear from her again and hopes the lack of a letter is simply because of shortages of writing paper.
He then discusses the air war:
“Last night Wuppertal was attacked again. Thank God you were not there again. Hopefully none of your relatives were in Wuppertal. Was Barmen bombed again too? When will it finally end?”
He urges Doris to remain in the cellar during raids and, if possible, to get out of Wuppertal. He tells her to remain cautious and keep her spirits up, writing that with willpower and trust in God one can recover again.
Paul asks whether she has received his previous letters and a small package, noting that a great deal of mail is being lost because of the many air raids.
He discusses photographs he is sending her, including pictures of Doris, her sister and the son of his friend. His affectionate comments make the personal relationship between Paul and Doris particularly evident.
Later he asks about her vacation and complains about the intense heat where he is stationed. He mentions that he must return to duty on Sunday near Biarritz, an interesting geographic reference suggesting he was serving in occupied France at this point.
On the reverse he returns to the destruction Doris has experienced. Referring to photographs apparently taken in the garden, he writes:
“What is the rubble heap doing? Don’t go in there anymore. Something could collapse too easily.”
He tells her not to look at the destruction if possible and adds that it is sad enough that she had to experience everything so terribly.
He closes affectionately:
“For today I will close. I ask you, think of me often. With much love, today I give you a kiss. Your Paul.”
He additionally sends heartfelt greetings to her parents and sisters.
A very personal piece of original wartime correspondence documenting the effects of the 1943 bombing campaign against Wuppertal/Barmen from the perspective of a German serviceman worried about a loved one at home.
The letter remains in good original condition for its age with period folds, edge wear, creasing and minor staining/handling marks as shown. Please see all photographs for exact condition.
