Original Third Reich Era German postcard depicting the famous “Der Tod von Oetting” (The Death of Oetting) skeleton figure and clock at the pilgrimage town of Altötting, Bavaria.
The striking image shows a skeletal figure of Death holding a large scythe above a Roman-numeral clock. An unusual memento mori subject and an interesting piece of Bavarian religious and cultural history.
The printed German text on the reverse reads:
“Eine der Hauptsehenswürdigkeiten des Wallfahrtsortes Altötting ist der ‘Tod von Oetting’. Es ist dieses ein silbernes Totengerippe, welches sich auf einer hohen Standuhr in der Pfarrkirche befindet und aus dem 17. Jahrhundert stammen dürfte.”
English Translation:
“One of the principal sights of the pilgrimage town of Altötting is the ‘Death of Oetting.’ It is a silver skeleton of Death which is located upon a tall clock in the parish church and is believed to date from the 17th century.”
The reverse is also marked Nr. 68 and Verlag: Hans Strauss, Altötting.
Unused with no writing, address, stamp, or postal cancellation. Shows normal age toning, minor spotting, and light corner/edge wear consistent with an older postcard. Please see photos for exact condition.
