Original WWII German Feldpost letter dated June 8, 1944, written at Weinsberg, Germany, just two days after the Allied D-Day landings in Normandy.

The multi-page handwritten letter begins “Lieber Kamerad Hans!” — “Dear Comrade Hans!” and is signed “Kamerad Fißler” (surname appears to read Fißler).

The contents are particularly interesting because the writer discusses his current location, leave arrangements, travel, and specifically mentions English officers being guarded nearby.

English Translation

Weinsberg, June 8, 1944

Dear Comrade Hans!

How are you? Many thanks for your letter, which I received some time ago. I had already written to you quite a while ago, but my letter came back again. I hope that this time you will receive some sign of life from me.

I have not forgotten the time in Ludwigsburg. I am here in Weinsberg with Adolf Hermann, about 6 kilometers from Heilbronn. It is a very beautiful area and there is good wine.

Here we are guarding English officers, about 1,200 men. Every other day we are on guard duty, and otherwise [we have duty/work] until around midday. I want to finish my letter now.

The leave restrictions have been lifted, and two noncommissioned officers are permitted to go on leave. The posts are being assigned; you must also know that things here are different from Ludwigsburg.

I still have little news. I have a bicycle here, so it is not as far as it was from Ludwigsburg.

For today I will close. Once again, heartfelt greetings from your comrade,

Fißler

Some words in the original handwriting are difficult to decipher, so a few portions have been translated by context rather than word-for-word.

This is an interesting wartime letter with a POW-related reference to approximately 1,200 English officers, along with references to Weinsberg, Heilbronn, Ludwigsburg, guard duty and military leave.

The letter remains fully handwritten across the folding stationery with its original period folds and age-related wear. Please see photographs for exact condition.
