WWI Imperial German 1916 Charity Postcard Armed Soldier Farming Behind Front

Original WWI German charity postcard featuring striking military artwork of an armed German soldier performing agricultural work behind the front lines.

The front is captioned:

“Friedensarbeit hinter der Front!”

Translation: “Peacetime work behind the front!”

The illustration, signed Morath, depicts a German soldier with rifle and full field equipment scattering seed by hand across a field, with another soldier working with horses in the background. It is an unusual WWI image showing soldiers engaged in agricultural work away from the immediate battlefield.

The reverse is prominently marked “WOHLFAHRTS-KARTE” — “Charity Postcard” and was sold for 10 Pfennig.

It was issued for the:

“Deutscher Verein für Säuglingsfürsorge 1916 e.V.”
Translation: “German Association for Infant Welfare 1916.”

The organization’s printed motto reads:

“Wir beugen uns vor Gott, weil Er so groß ist, und vor dem Kinde, weil es so klein ist.”

Translation:

“We bow before God because He is so great, and before the child because it is so small.”

The card also bears the wording “Deutschlands Nachwuchs” and “Deutschlands Zukunft”, referring to Germany’s next generation / Germany’s future.

The reverse contains extensive handwritten period correspondence and is addressed to Hans Adams in Hamborn, making this a particularly interesting combination of WWI military, home-front, agricultural and German social-welfare history.

Condition is as shown with age-related toning, edge and corner wear, handwriting, postal wear and a visible crease/crack near the upper portion of the reverse. Please see photos for exact condition.
