Description
Offered is an original and increasingly difficult to find Third Reich color cigarette card featuring Ernst Röhm, Chief of Staff of the SA (Sturmabteilung), from the popular series “Kampf um’s Dritte Reich” issued by Cigarettenfabrik Constantin of Dresden.
This card is identified as Bild 58 – “Stabschef Röhm” and depicts Röhm in early brownshirt uniform during the rise of the National Socialist movement. The reverse contains the original printed advertising text for the Constantin cigarette album series, which comprised 273 collectible cards.
Color cards of Ernst Röhm are considerably scarcer than those depicting other leaders due to his fall from power and subsequent execution in 1934. Many examples were discarded or destroyed, making surviving originals desirable historical artifacts.
The card remains in very good condition with attractive color and measures approximately standard cigarette card size.
History of Ernst Röhm
Ernst Röhm (1887–1934) was a decorated First World War veteran and one of Adolf Hitler’s earliest political allies. He became head of the SA (Sturmabteilung), commonly known as the Brownshirts, and played a major role in helping the National Socialist movement rise to power during the 1920s and early 1930s. By 1934, the SA had grown into an organization of nearly three million men.
As the SA became increasingly powerful, tensions developed between Röhm and the German military leadership. Hitler and other leading figures feared that Röhm’s ambitions threatened their control of the state. In late June and early July 1934, during the event later known as the Night of the Long Knives, Hitler ordered a purge of SA leaders and political opponents. Röhm was arrested and ultimately executed on 1 July 1934, bringing an end to his influence and greatly diminishing the power of the SA.
Following Röhm’s death, the SS rose to prominence while the SA was relegated to a largely ceremonial role.
