WWI German 1916 Feldpost Postcard King Ludwig III Bavaria Soldier Marked Photo

Original WWI German Feldpost postcard showing the visit of King Ludwig III of Bavaria to his troops at Valenciennes, France, on January 11, 1916.

This is an especially interesting example because the original sender appears to have been one of the soldiers actually present in the photograph.

On the front, a small hand-drawn “X” marks the sender’s position among the assembled troops. The handwritten message on the reverse, dated March 5, 1916, includes wording to the effect of:

“Here you can see me…”

This indicates that the soldier who wrote and sent this postcard was identifying himself in the actual photograph—a fantastic personal connection to the event pictured.

The photograph shows a massive formation of Bavarian/German troops assembled in Valenciennes, with numerous soldiers carrying rifles with fixed bayonets. The scene was taken during the wartime visit of King Ludwig III, the last King of Bavaria, to his troops on the Western Front.

The printed German caption reads:

“Besuch S. M. des Königs Ludwig III. von Bayern b. seinen Truppen in Valenciennes am 11. Jan. 1916.”

Translation:

“Visit of His Majesty King Ludwig III of Bavaria to his troops in Valenciennes on January 11, 1916.”

The reverse is printed “Feldpostkarte” and contains an extensive handwritten wartime message. It is addressed to Rottach am Tegernsee, Oberbayern (Upper Bavaria).

Published by Otto GmbH, Düsseldorf.

A particularly desirable piece of WWI Bavarian military and Feldpost history, made much more personal by the sender marking himself in the photograph and referring to his presence in the handwritten message.
