WW2 German Wehrmacht Officers Reichsbahn Railway Hospital Train to Russia Photo

Original WWII German photograph dated July 4, 1941, showing an excellent railway scene with Wehrmacht personnel and uniformed Deutsche Reichsbahn railway officials posed alongside a train.

Several men can be seen looking from the windows of the railway car, including uniformed military personnel, while Reichsbahn officials stand beside the train. A very nice close-up period image showing the interaction between the German military and railway system during the war.

The handwritten inscription on the reverse appears to read:

“B. u. 282 Aufnahme im Lazarettzug am 4. Juli 1941 nach Rußland.”

Translation

“B. u. 282. Photograph taken in the hospital train on July 4, 1941, en route to Russia.”

The reference to a Lazarettzug (hospital train) and the specific July 4, 1941 date make this particularly interesting, as the photograph was taken shortly after the beginning of the German campaign against the Soviet Union.

Measures approximately 3.5 x 2.5 inches. See ruler for size comparison. Original period photograph with scalloped edges and age-related wear as shown.
