1901 Prince Regent Luitpold Bavaria 80th Birthday Embossed German Postcard

Original 1901 Bavarian commemorative postcard honoring the 80th birthday of Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria.

The front features a portrait of Luitpold surrounded by ornate gold decoration, the Bavarian blue-and-white flags, royal crown and decorative foliage. The card is particularly attractive with its period color and gold accents.

Printed beneath the portrait:

“12. März 1821–1901”

and:

“Zur Erinnerung an den 80. Geburtstag Seiner kgl. Hoheit Prinz Regent ‘Luitpold’ von Bayern.”

Translation:

“In remembrance of the 80th birthday of His Royal Highness Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria.”

Luitpold was born March 12, 1821, and served as Prince Regent of Bavaria from 1886 until his death in 1912.

The reverse has an attractive embossed floral design and retains its original Bavaria 5 Pfennig coat-of-arms stamp. The card was postally used in 1901, the same year as Luitpold’s 80th birthday celebration.
