1936 Nazi German Third Reich Era Household Pass Food Ration Document

Original pre-WWII Nazi German Third Reich Era Haushaltsnachweis (“Household Verification”) document issued in Cologne (Köln), Germany in 1936 by the municipal authorities.

This document was used to establish the composition of a household and its eligibility in connection with the regulated distribution of foodstuffs. It is particularly interesting because the reverse contains a Kundenliste (“customer list”) specifically divided into:

“für Schmalz, Speck und Talg” — for lard, bacon and tallow
and
“für andere Fette” — for other fats.

The document appears to have been issued to the Klein household in Köln-Nippes. The occupation written at upper right appears to read “Versicherungs-Angest.”, an abbreviation for Versicherungsangestellter — an insurance employee/clerk. The household is recorded as consisting of 3 persons.

Dated 1936, with an official purple municipal stamp and handwritten authorization/signature from the Statistisches und Einwohneramt (Statistical and Residents’ Office).

The reverse has two excellent period business stamps. One is from:

Johann Baedorf – Metzgerei – Köln-Nippes
a butcher shop in Cologne-Nippes.

The other reads:

C. F. Beck, Köln – Filiale Sechzigstraße 7

These merchant markings make the piece particularly interesting as evidence of how individual households were registered with specific retailers for controlled food distribution.

The printed heading at upper left identifies the issuing authority as:

“Der Oberbürgermeister der Hansestadt Köln – Statistisches und Einwohneramt”
“The Lord Mayor of the Hanseatic City of Cologne – Statistical and Residents’ Office.”

An excellent piece of original 1930s German civilian economic and social-history ephemera, predating WWII and documenting the food-control and household-registration system that developed further during the wartime rationing period.
