Very interesting 19th-century Florida Express philatelic stamp/label featuring a mounted express rider carrying a letter or dispatch. Printed in reddish brown on light paper, the design is inscribed “Florida” across the top and “Express” at the bottom.
These unusual Florida Express issues have a long history in early American philately. Although early stamp catalogs described them as 1860s Florida/Confederate issues, later research found no evidence that an actual Florida Express postal operation used these stamps. They are consequently classified today as bogus local or fantasy issues, with several different varieties known.
Importantly, these are not necessarily modern reproductions. Florida Express fantasy stamps were already circulating among collectors in the 19th century, and examples attributed to prolific early stamp producer S. Allan Taylor are documented.
This example is MNG – Mint No Gum, with no cancellation. It has attractive reddish-brown printing, full margins and a strong overall appearance.
A fascinating piece for collectors of early American cinderellas, Confederate-era philatelic fantasies, bogus local posts, express labels and unusual 19th-century U.S. philately.
