Interesting Wolfsschanze / Wilczy Szaniec (Wolf’s Lair) historical souvenir postcard featuring four archival photographs from the famous WWII German military headquarters complex near Rastenburg in East Prussia, today Gierłoż, Poland.

The front is titled:

“WILCZY SZANIEC – WOLFSSCHANZE”
Translation: “Wolf’s Lair.”

The four historical images depict:

  • German officials and military personnel at the headquarters complex.
  • A staff car arriving at one of the guarded checkpoints.
  • Military personnel beside a special train.
  • An interior wartime conference/operations room with officers seated at tables.

The Wolfsschanze was constructed beginning in 1940 and served as one of Germany’s principal eastern military command headquarters during WWII. It consisted of bunkers, command buildings, barracks, checkpoints, railway facilities and other heavily guarded installations hidden within the Masurian forests.

It is particularly remembered as the location of the July 20, 1944 assassination attempt carried out by Claus von Stauffenberg.

Postcard Details

The reverse is marked:

“0207 M © PRO-ART”
“Wilczy Szaniec/Wolfsschanze – foto: archiwum”

The Polish “foto: archiwum” translates to “photos: archive,” confirming that the scenes reproduced on the card are archival photographs.

This is a later historical souvenir postcard, not a WWII-period postcard. The PRO-ART design is documented as having been sold through the Wolfsschanze souvenir shop by at least 2004.

Unused and unmailed. Please see photographs for exact condition.

A great display piece for collectors of Wolfsschanze, Wolf’s Lair, WWII German headquarters, military history, East Prussia, Rastenburg and historical postcards.
