Schalburg was a Danish military officer who became commander of the Frikorps Danmark (Free Corps Denmark), a Danish volunteer formation serving with the Waffen-SS on the Eastern Front. He was killed in action in 1942, and his name was subsequently used by Danish National Socialist organizations and the memorial fund.
