Very interesting original German Fischer family military postal history grouping spanning both World War I and World War II, preserving correspondence associated with members of the same family across two generations of wartime service.
The grouping includes original Feldpost envelopes and handwritten letters, including correspondence addressed to Hildegard Fischer in Gera and mail associated with Max Fischer. One WWII envelope has a handwritten sender notation on the reverse identifying “Abs.: Zahlmeister Fischer” together with Feldpostnummer 35070. “Zahlmeister” was a military administrative/paymaster designation.
One of the large handwritten WWII letters is clearly dated “Rußland, 6. Januar 1942” — “Russia, 6 January 1942,” giving this grouping particularly desirable Eastern Front provenance. The envelope addressed to Hildegard Fischer bears a Feldpost cancellation dated 14.1.42, placing the correspondence firmly within the early 1942 Russian campaign.
Also included is earlier correspondence addressed to Herrn Max Fischer, Glogau, with a clearly visible 1918 Glogau postmark, providing the WWI-era component of this family archive.
German Feldpost was the military postal system that maintained communication between soldiers and their families. During WWII, five-digit Feldpostnummern were normally used to route mail to military units while concealing the unit’s actual identity and location. This makes surviving family groups especially interesting because the numbers, cancellations, dates, addresses and letter contents can potentially be researched together.
Included in this lot: multiple original handwritten letters, original WWI and WWII envelopes/covers, visible Feldpost and civilian postal cancellations, Fischer family correspondence, Feldpostnummer 35070, and the modern illustrated “Feldpost – German Military Mail: A Lifeline From the Front” reference/display sheet shown in the photographs.
The handwritten material appears to contain substantial personal correspondence and would make an excellent research project for someone interested in German Feldpost, military genealogy, postal history, WWI/WWII family correspondence, or Eastern Front history.
All pieces show age-appropriate wear including folds, edge wear, toning and handling. Everything included is shown in the photographs. See photos carefully for condition and exact contents.
Historical collector’s material offered for research, preservation and educational purposes.
