Original pre-WWII German real photo postcard showing the impressive Christ on the Cross sculpture in St. Sebaldus Church (St. Sebalduskirche), Nuremberg, Germany.
The printed caption on the reverse reads:
“Nürnberg – Skt. Sebalduskirche
Veit Stoß: Christus am Kreuz
Holz. 1520”
Translation:
“Nuremberg – St. Sebaldus Church
Veit Stoss: Christ on the Cross
Wood, 1520.”
The photograph provides a dramatic close-up of the carved wooden crucifix attributed on the card to Veit Stoss (Veit Stoß), one of the most important German sculptors of the late Gothic and early Renaissance periods. Particularly striking are the detailed crown of thorns, facial features, hair and anatomical carving.
The reverse bears the “Echte Photographie” marking and publisher information for Christof Müller, Nürnberg-A. It also contains extensive period handwritten German notes, apparently describing sightseeing/travel in Nuremberg. The card is unused for postal purposes.
An excellent original German photographic card for collectors of Nuremberg history, German religious art, Gothic sculpture, Veit Stoss, church architecture and prewar German photography.
Condition: Good original vintage condition with expected age and handling wear. Deckled photographic edges and period handwriting on reverse. Please examine photos carefully for exact condition.
