Original 2-document grouping from May 1945 belonging to German Army serviceman Franz Ernst, documenting his processing and discharge under Allied control immediately following the end of the war in Europe. Both documents contain extensive handwritten information, original signatures and official processing details, making this an excellent matched late-war/occupation grouping.

The first document is “CONTROL FORM D.2 – CERTIFICATE OF DISCHARGE.” It identifies the holder as Franz Ernst, born 10 June 1918 in Dortmund, civilian occupation Landwirt (farmer), with a home address at Wernau, Kreis Esslingen, Württemberg. Ernst personally signed the form.

The medical section records “keine” under distinguishing marks and “marschfähig,” meaning “fit/able to march.” The medical category states “frei von Ungeziefer und ansteckenden Krankheiten,” translating to “free from vermin and contagious diseases.” This section is signed by Dr. Kurtz, St. Arzt.

Most importantly, the form records Franz Ernst as being discharged from the ARMY on 22 May 1945. The lower portion bears an official impressed/embossed Allied seal, along with the signature of the Allied discharging officer. The handwritten identification appears to read George F. Ammirato, Major Infantry.

The second document is AREA CONTROL FORM P.4 – PERSONAL DATA SHEET, with information on both sides. It provides considerably more information concerning Ernst’s military background. The entries identify his service as “HEER” (German Army) and record his Wehrnummer as Herne 18/131/8.

His unit is handwritten as “Geb. Vet. Kp. 101”, apparently a Gebirgs-Veterinär-Kompanie 101 (Mountain Veterinary Company 101), with the location recorded as Nesselbach. His military occupation is entered as Oberbeschlagmeister, a specialist senior farrier/horseshoeing position associated with the care and shoeing of military horses. His civilian/professional trade also references Huf- und Wagenschmied, essentially a horseshoer/farrier and wagon smith, fitting closely with his military veterinary/farrier assignment.

Additional entries record his German nationality, Westphalian/Arnsberg-area information, family status and next-of-kin/contact information. The form was subsequently marked “DISCHARGED” in the change-of-status section.

The reverse contains the formal certification signed by Franz Ernst himself, certifying the accuracy of the information. The authentication section is dated 20.5.45 and bears another original officer’s signature and unit notation.

Together, these documents provide an unusually detailed snapshot of one German Army serviceman’s transition from military service into Allied-controlled civilian life in May 1945, including his name, birthplace, Wehrnummer, unit, military specialty, civilian occupation, medical clearance, personal signature, Allied processing and final discharge.

Both documents remain together as an original grouping. They show expected period use with folds, edge and corner wear, toning, small tears/nicks, punched holes, staples and handling/storage marks as clearly shown in the photographs. The embossed seal on the discharge certificate remains visible.

Guaranteed original period grouping. Both documents shown are included. We combine shipping and ship every day, including Saturdays.
