Interesting piece here, an original WWII German military engagement authorization document issued in the field on May 31, 1944, to an officer serving with Luftwaffe Flakregiment 21 (mot.) — Motorized Anti-Aircraft Regiment 21.
The upper left is typed “Flakregiment 21 (mot)”, while the upper right reads:
“Gefechtsstand, den 31.5.1944”
“Command Post, May 31, 1944.”
This is particularly interesting because it was not simply a civilian marriage document—it is an official military authorization permitting an officer to publicly announce his engagement.
The document was issued to Leutnant (Kr.O.) Paul Schmitz and concerns his engagement to Fräulein Christel Becker, born May 11, 1923.
Full Translation
“1st Copy
Lieutenant (Kr.O.) Paul Schmitz is hereby granted permission to publicly announce his engagement to Miss Christel Becker, born May 11, 1923.”
The document is signed at the bottom by the:
“Oberst und Regimentskommandeur”
“Colonel and Regimental Commander.”
It also carries a very attractive circular Flak Regiment 21 official military ink stamp, prominently displaying the German military eagle and swastika. The combination of the unit designation, command-post issue location, officer’s name, engagement authorization, regimental commander’s signature and unit seal makes this a fascinating personal wartime document.
The May 31, 1944 date is also notable, as this authorization was issued only six days before the Allied D-Day landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944.
A very unusual piece of WWII German military and personal history, documenting the private life of a serving officer while attached to an active motorized anti-aircraft regiment.
Condition: Very nice original condition with a central period fold, light toning and normal handling/storage wear. Typed text remains exceptionally clear, and the official unit stamp and commander’s signature display very well. Please examine all photographs for exact condition.
Authenticity: Guaranteed original WWII-period German document.
