Original vintage Czechoslovak political election leaflet addressed directly to voters of the 38th rural electoral district, covering Mnichovo Hradiště, Turnov, Český Dub and Bělá u Bezděze.

The large headline reads:

“P. T. voličům 38. volebního okresu venkovského!”

Translation:

“To the Esteemed Voters of the 38th Rural Electoral District!”

The leaflet announces an upcoming election on May 23 and asks voters a pointed political question:

“agrárník nebo soc. demokrat?”

Translation:

“Agrarian or Social Democrat?”

The lengthy Czech-language text is essentially a political appeal aimed particularly at workers, small farmers, smallholders, craftsmen and rural voters, arguing against the Agrarian Party and attempting to persuade voters to support the Social Democrats.

Interesting Content

The leaflet discusses a broad range of contemporary political and economic issues, including the treatment of agricultural and industrial workers, wages, housing conditions, taxation, municipal employees, teachers and civil servants, small farmers and tradesmen, sugar-industry workers, and the influence of wealthy landowners and agricultural interests.

Several passages directly challenge the reader to consider what the Agrarian Party had actually accomplished for ordinary rural people. One prominent passage asks:

“Co učinila kdy dobrého strana agrární pro Vás, Vy zemědělští dělníci?”

Translation:

“What good has the Agrarian Party ever done for you, agricultural workers?”

The text repeatedly contrasts the interests of ordinary workers and smallholders with those of large landowners and wealthy agricultural interests. It also refers to disputes involving sugar factories and agricultural laborers, making it an interesting piece of early Czechoslovak social and political history.

Near the end, the leaflet again challenges the voter:

“Za to jim dáte dnes svůj hlas?”

Approximately:

“And for that, will you give them your vote today?”

The document is an excellent surviving example of interwar Czechoslovak election propaganda, showing the political competition for the rural and working-class vote between the Agrarian and Social Democratic movements.

Condition

Good used vintage condition with overall age toning, horizontal and vertical fold lines, wrinkles, light staining/spotting, edge and corner wear and several small edge tears. The sheet remains substantially complete and the printing is dark, clear and highly readable. Please examine the photograph carefully for exact condition.

A very interesting piece for a collection focused on Czechoslovakia, European political history, Social Democracy, agricultural politics, elections, labor history or vintage political ephemera.
