Original WWII German Military Soldier Humor Cartoon Print Winter in Lappland 1942

Original WWII-era German large-format illustrated military humor print titled:

“Ein Wintertag im Lappland”
Translation: “A Winter Day in Lapland.”

This is an outstanding, highly detailed color cartoon depicting the everyday hardships, routines and humor of German troops stationed in the far north during the winter campaign. The illustration is signed and dated 1942 at the lower right.

The scene is packed with dozens of individual vignettes showing soldiers attempting to function in deep snow and extreme cold. Visible subjects include troops on skis, log bunkers and huts, sentries, horse-drawn sledges, motorcycles, military vehicles, soldiers carrying supplies, chopping wood, cooking, digging through snow, handling equipment, standing in formation, and interacting around the camp.

Numerous humorous signs and details are scattered throughout the illustration, including a “KINO” cinema hut, “Entlausung” (delousing) sign, directional signs, supply crates, a camp notice board, and other small jokes intended to be discovered throughout the picture. The artist has essentially created a military version of a busy “hidden detail” cartoon.

The Lapland subject is particularly interesting historically. German forces operated throughout northern Finland and Lapland during WWII, where extreme winter temperatures, snow, primitive roads and enormous distances made transportation and everyday military life exceptionally difficult. The artwork captures this environment from the humorous perspective of someone familiar with camp life.

This is also an unusually large piece, measuring approximately 13 x 13 inches, it would look beautiful framed.

The reverse is blank. The paper shows genuine age and use, including a prominent original vertical center fold, additional creasing and wrinkles, edge and corner wear, small edge tears/nicks, toning and general handling. The illustration itself remains colorful and displays extremely well. Please study all photographs for exact condition.

A fantastic original piece of WWII German soldier humor and Lapland campaign artwork, with an enormous amount of detail and character. This would frame especially well and offers an interesting snapshot of winter military life beyond conventional combat imagery.
