Offered here is an original 1939 German Third Reich-era edition of Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf, the well-known Volksausgabe — “People’s Edition” — published in Munich by the official Party publishing house, Zentralverlag der NSDAP, Franz Eher Nachfolger.
This is a strong, highly displayable original pre-WWII example, retaining its dark blue cloth-covered boards with the gilt period German state eagle emblem on the front and gilt “Adolf Hitler – Mein Kampf” lettering on the spine.
The title page clearly dates this copy to 1939 and identifies it as the:
“509.–513. Auflage” — 509th–513th printing
This is the Ungekürzte Ausgabe, meaning the “Unabridged Edition,” containing both volumes together in one book.
Title Page Translation
“Mein Kampf – Von Adolf Hitler”
“Mein Kampf – By Adolf Hitler”
“Zwei Bände in einem Band”
“Two volumes in one volume”
“Ungekürzte Ausgabe”
“Unabridged edition”
“Erster Band: Eine Abrechnung”
“First Volume: A Reckoning”
“Zweiter Band: Die nationalsozialistische Bewegung”
“Second Volume: The National Socialist Movement”
“509.–513. Auflage”
“509th–513th printing”
“Zentralverlag der NSDAP, Frz. Eher Nachf., München”
“Central Publishing House of the NSDAP, Franz Eher Successors, Munich”
The book retains the original frontispiece portrait with a printed facsimile signature beneath it.
Also present is the important memorial page listing the men killed during the failed November 9, 1923 Munich putsch. The introductory portion translates approximately:
“On November 9, 1923, at 12:30 in the afternoon, before the Feldherrnhalle and in the courtyard of the former War Ministry in Munich, the following men fell in faithful belief in the resurrection of their people…”
The page lists the names of those commemorated and concludes with a statement dated:
“Landsberg a. L., Festungshaftanstalt, 16. Oktober 1924”
Translation: “Landsberg am Lech, Fortress Prison, October 16, 1924.”
Original Publisher Advertisements
An especially interesting feature of this copy is the extensive period advertising material bound into the rear. These pages promote books, political publications and periodicals available through the official publishing network and provide an excellent snapshot of Third Reich print culture in 1939.
One advertisement reads:
“Das Werk des Führers – Mein Kampf ist auch in einer Geschenkausgabe erschienen.”
Translation:
“The work of the Führer — Mein Kampf — has also appeared in a gift edition.”
It then advertises large-format two-volume editions in cloth and half-leather bindings.
Other advertised publications include works by Joseph Goebbels, Hermann Göring, Rudolf Hess, Alfred Ingemar Berndt, Franz Buchner, Erich Gritzbach, Hannes Kremer, and Josef H. Krumbach, including:
“Der Angriff” — “The Attack”
“Vom Kaiserhof zur Reichskanzlei” — “From the Kaiserhof to the Reich Chancellery”
“Reden und Aufsätze” — “Speeches and Essays”
“Hermann Göring – Werk und Mensch” — “Hermann Göring – Work and Man”
“Rudolf Hess, Reden” — “Rudolf Hess, Speeches”
“Meilensteine des Dritten Reiches” — “Milestones of the Third Reich”
“Gebt mir vier Jahre Zeit” — “Give Me Four Years”
“Kamerad! Halt aus!” — approximately “Comrade! Hold On!”
Another page advertises:
“Nationalsozialistische Monatshefte” — “National Socialist Monthly Issues”
and identifies Reichsleiter Alfred Rosenberg as editor. The accompanying text describes it as a political and cultural periodical of the NSDAP.
The rear advertisement for Illustrierter Beobachter describes it as:
“Bildberichterstatter der Bewegung”
Translation: “Pictorial reporter of the movement.”
It advertises a new issue every Thursday for 20 Pfennig.
Another illustrated page quotes a February 1930 statement:
“Der Name ‘Völkischer Beobachter’ ist zu einem Programm für sich geworden.”
Translation:
“The name ‘Völkischer Beobachter’ has become a program in itself.”
Condition
This example presents very well for its age. The dark blue cloth binding remains attractive with clearly visible gilt front emblem and spine lettering. There is expected age-related shelf wear, light rubbing, handling marks and minor edge/corner wear consistent with an original book from 1939.
The interior appears generally clean and well preserved, with expected age toning and occasional minor spotting or handling wear. The original frontispiece, title page, memorial page and extensive publisher advertisements remain present as shown.
Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition and completeness. Sold exactly as pictured and as-is.
This is a desirable original 1939 Volksausgabe / People’s Edition, representing one of the most recognizable mass-market editions produced in Germany immediately before the outbreak of WWII. The combination of the 1939 publication date, 509th–513th printing designation, original blue cloth binding, gilt period emblem, unabridged two-volumes-in-one format, portrait frontispiece, memorial page and extensive original publisher advertising makes this a substantial historical display and research piece.
Excellent material for an advanced collection focused on Third Reich history, WWII-era Germany, German political publications, propaganda history, NSDAP publishing, Franz Eher Verlag, prewar German books, historical research, or 20th-century European history.
Guaranteed original period item — not a modern reproduction.
Items are sold as shown and as-is. Please review all photographs carefully. We combine shipping and ship every day, including Saturdays.
