Original Rare WWII German Das Neue Deutschland, Norddeutsche Ausgabe (North German Edition), dated 15 November 1944. This is an especially interesting late-war anti-Nazi German resistance/propaganda newspaper, attacking Hitler, Himmler, the SS, NSDAP leadership and the Volkssturm while encouraging Germans to turn against the regime.

This is a single sheet miniature newspaper sheet printed on both sides, packed with wartime political material. The masthead carries the slogan:

“Die Zukunft gehört jenen, die sich auf sie vorbereiten!”
“The future belongs to those who prepare themselves for it!”

Major Front-Page Headline – Hitler & Switzerland

The enormous central headline reads:

“Geheimreise Hitlers in die Schweiz”
“Hitler’s Secret Trip to Switzerland”

with the subtitle:

“Gescheiterte Friedensverhandlung, aber geglückte Vermögensverschiebung”

Approximately:

“Failed Peace Negotiations, but Successful Transfer of Assets.”

The lengthy article alleges a secret journey by Hitler to Switzerland in October 1944, supposed contacts concerning peace negotiations, and the movement of Hitler’s and other Party leaders’ assets into Switzerland. The text discusses Bern, Swiss banking, foreign diplomats and alleged financial arrangements.

An especially striking period photograph printed beneath the article shows Hitler in civilian clothing, accompanied by another man. Period handwritten ink notation is present diagonally across part of the main article.

“Volkssturm – SOS der SS”

One of the most historically interesting columns is headed:

“Volkssturm – SOS der SS”

Published shortly after the creation of the Volkssturm, the article attacks Himmler, the SS and Party leadership and urges Germans to resist being absorbed into the Volkssturm.

The section culminates in the bold statement:

“VOLKSSTURM GEGEN DIE PARTEI!”
“VOLKSSTURM AGAINST THE PARTY!”

This makes the newspaper particularly interesting as an example of anti-regime psychological warfare directed at Germans during the desperate final months of WWII.

Reverse Side – “NSDAP – Medizin im Dienste des Massenmordes”

The reverse has another exceptionally strong headline:

“NSDAP – Medizin im Dienste des Massenmordes”

Translation:

“NSDAP – Medicine in the Service of Mass Murder.”

The article reproduces images of German military/official documents and attacks the regime’s medical and racial policies. Directly beneath is a quotation attributed to Adolf Hitler concerning the preservation and propagation of the German race, presented by the newspaper in a sharply critical context.

Additional Articles

Other fascinating wartime subjects include “Deutsche Beamte!” addressing German civil servants; “Frauenstädte” concerning women, families and conditions inside Germany; “Das Kainszeichen”, attacking SS personnel and describing identifying marks/tattoos; “Arbeiterzukunft” discussing the future of German workers after the war; and “Die Wunderwaffe wird abgebaut”, criticizing German claims surrounding the so-called miracle weapons and specifically discussing the V-2 rocket.

The front also includes “Glaube und Irrglaube” and a section “Zum 11. November”, contrasting the end of the First World War with Germany’s situation in November 1944.

Historical Interest

Unlike an official NSDAP newspaper, Das Neue Deutschland represented anti-Nazi material aimed at undermining confidence in Hitler and the regime. The openly hostile language toward the NSDAP, SS, Gestapo, Himmler and Hitler makes this a very different piece of German-language WWII ephemera from conventional Third Reich newspapers.

The combination of the sensational Hitler Switzerland headline, Hitler photograph, Volkssturm/SS article, V-2 discussion, reproduced military documents and anti-NSDAP material gives this issue tremendous historical display and research interest.

Das Neue Deutschland was actually an OSS-produced (Pre CIA) “black propaganda” publication, designed to appear as though it came from a German underground opposition movement.

Condition

Heavily used but substantially intact condition. There is overall age toning, original fold lines, edge and fold wear, creasing, small tears and losses. A significant irregular section is missing from the left edge, affecting portions of the text on that side. There is also handwritten ink notation across the central front-page article and additional minor marks. Printing remains strong and the overwhelming majority of the newspaper remains readable. Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition.
