Rare Original WWII Luftwaffe Kriegs-Weihnacht 1940 Christmas Adolf Hitler Portrait Flag Photo

Exceptional original WWII German Luftwaffe photograph documenting a Kriegs-Weihnacht (Wartime Christmas) celebration in 1940.

The photograph shows a crowded room of Luftwaffe personnel gathered around a table with bottles, food and Christmas decorations. Numerous Luftwaffe uniforms and collar insignia are clearly visible throughout the image.

What makes this photograph especially striking is the extraordinary amount of period detail visible in a single scene. Behind the men is a large Third Reich swastika flag, while the wall at right displays a very clear framed portrait of Adolf Hitler surrounded by Christmas greenery. Immediately beside it is a decorated sign reading:

“Kriegs-Weihnacht 1940”

which translates as:

“Wartime Christmas 1940.”

“Kriegsweihnacht” was the contemporary German term used for wartime Christmas celebrations. Archival material confirms its use specifically in December 1940, and surviving contemporary Wehrmacht material documents military units holding organized Christmas celebrations that year.

The scene is an excellent piece of Luftwaffe social-history documentation, showing how a military Christmas gathering was decorated and conducted during the early part of WWII. The combination of the dated 1940 Christmas sign, Luftwaffe uniforms, large flag, Hitler portrait and extensive holiday decorations makes this considerably more visually interesting than the typical German soldier group photograph.

There is some surface reflection/glare visible in the photographs of the photograph; this is from the glossy photographic surface and is not part of the original image.

Condition: Original period photograph with expected age and handling wear. There is a noticeable crease/tear at the upper-left margin and some lighter edge wear. The actual photographic image remains strong with excellent contrast and unusually crisp background details. Please examine the photographs carefully for exact condition.

An excellent original photograph for a collection focusing on Luftwaffe history, German military Christmas celebrations, Kriegsweihnacht, wartime social history or WWII German photography.
