Original 1936 Austrian real photo postcard showing an exceptionally interesting street scene in Innsbruck, Austria, with buildings prominently decorated with political and national flags.
The handwritten caption along the bottom reads:
“Innsbruck, Mariahilf, weißes Lamm 29.8.1936”
Translation:
“Innsbruck, Mariahilf, White Lamb, August 29, 1936.”
The photograph shows the historic Mariahilf district of Innsbruck, including the “Weißes Lamm” (White Lamb) inn/gasthof area. Most notably, a very large Nazi swastika flag is hanging directly over the street, together with several other flags displayed from the buildings, including imperial German flags and an interesting black flag with a white X. Civilians, including adults and children, can be seen standing along the sidewalk while a period automobile approaches the camera.
The date is particularly interesting because this photograph was taken in August 1936, nearly two years before the Anschluss of Austria into Nazi Germany in March 1938. This makes the prominent display of a swastika flag in an Austrian street scene especially noteworthy as a piece of pre-Anschluss photographic history.
Reverse / Postal Details
The postcard was subsequently mailed and bears a 12 Groschen Österreich postage stamp with a clear Innsbruck cancellation. The handwritten correspondence is dated:
“Innsbruck 15.10.36” — Innsbruck, October 15, 1936.
The card contains an extensive handwritten German message and is addressed to a female recipient. Portions of the old German cursive are difficult to decipher with certainty, but it appears to be primarily personal correspondence rather than political content.
The printed publisher mark at lower right reads “Roko.”
A particularly strong historical photograph combining:
- Innsbruck / Tyrol local history
- Mariahilf street scene
- Weißes Lamm Gasthof
- Large Nazi swastika flag
- Pre-Anschluss Austria
- Period automobile and civilians
- 1936 Austrian postal history
- Original Austrian postage stamp and Innsbruck cancel
- Handwritten period correspondence
Condition shows normal age and postal wear with some light edge/corner wear, minor surface marks and writing on the reverse. Overall the photographic image remains sharp and displays very well. Please examine all photographs for exact condition.
An excellent and unusual pre-WWII Austrian political and social-history photograph, particularly desirable for collectors of Innsbruck, Tirol, Anschluss-era material, Third Reich history and European photographic postal history.
