Original antique hand-colored military portrait photograph of a German soldier in uniform, photographed in Metz by the studio of Louis Hermestroff.
The photographer’s decorative studio mount on the reverse reads:
Louis Hermestroff – Photograph. Atelier – Metz
11 Priesterstrasse / 16 Bankstrasse
Louis Hermestroff (1861–1932) took over the Metz photographic studios at 11 Rue des Clercs (Priesterstrasse 11) and 16 Nexirue (Bankstrasse 16) in 1887. His son François later succeeded him after World War I.
The portrait shows a young soldier wearing a high-collared Imperial-era uniform. Particularly attractive is the period hand coloring, with bright red applied to the collar and shoulder boards and gold coloring highlighting the buttons and collar detail. The photograph also has handwritten period inscriptions on the reverse.
Measures approximately 3.75″ x 2.75″.
Good antique condition with expected age-related wear, minor marks, edge/corner wear and writing on the reverse. Please see all photographs for exact condition.
Original period photograph — not a modern reproduction.
