Excellent original WWII German Gebirgsjäger military training document, dated 2 June 1942 at Klagenfurt, Austria, for:
Geb.Jäg.Reg. 139, Ersatz-Batl., 2. Kompanie
(Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 139, Replacement Battalion, 2nd Company)
The document is headed “Abschrift” (copy/transcript) and “Ausbildungsplan für eine 3-wöchentliche Unterführer-Ausbildung” — a three-week training plan for junior leaders/NCOs.
This is a particularly detailed multi-page training schedule covering 8–27 June 1942. Rather than routine administrative paperwork, it provides a day-by-day look at how German mountain troops were being instructed in infantry combat, weapons handling, fieldcraft, reconnaissance and small-unit tactics.
Particularly Interesting Training Content
The schedule includes numerous specific subjects:
- Gefechtsausbildung – combat training
- Open-order formations and approaching an enemy position
- Conduct under enemy artillery and machine-gun fire
- Fire-and-movement training
- Rifle instruction and marksmanship
- l.M.G. – light machine-gun training
- Pistol training
- Pz.-Büchse – anti-tank rifle training
- Hand-grenade instruction
- Gas-mask instruction and repeated “Gas-Tag” annotations
- Fighting while wearing a gas mask
- Gas-mask drill and use of the gas cape
- Defensive positions and field fortifications
- Attack from long, medium and close range
- Nahkampfausbildung – close-combat training
- Night movement and night orientation
- Night exercises
- Field guard and patrol duty
- Spähtruppdienst – reconnaissance patrol training
- Angriff auf Bunker (Stoßtrupp) – assault on a bunker by an assault detachment
- Stoßtrupp Angriff auf Bunker – assault-team bunker attack
- Forest and village fighting
- Enemy tank and aircraft response
- Encounter with enemy reconnaissance patrols
- Fliegerabwehr – anti-aircraft defense using rifles and light machine guns
- Military drill, inspections and weapons maintenance
One of the strongest portions is dated 23–24 June 1942, where the men were specifically instructed in bunker assaults using Stoßtrupp tactics, followed by night field-watch and reconnaissance exercises.
The June 25 entry covers “Wald- und Ortskämpfe” — forest and built-up-area combat — while the June 27 entry includes anti-aircraft defense with rifle and light machine gun.
Named Personnel
A number of instructors/officers appear throughout the schedule, including:
Lt. Braeuner
Lt. Schiestl
Fw. Sobotka
Fw. Petruscan
Ofw. Rajakowitsch
The final page concludes with:
“gez. Unterschrift – Oberleutnant und Kompaniechef”
(Signed, First Lieutenant and Company Commander)
There are also numerous contemporary handwritten annotations, corrections, training references and red pencil markings throughout, including several handwritten “Gas-Tag” notations.
Historical Interest
An unusually detailed piece of Gebirgsjäger training history that provides a nearly day-by-day picture of the instruction given to junior leaders of the Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 139 replacement organization at Klagenfurt in June 1942.
The combination of mountain-troop identification with Stoßtrupp bunker assault, close combat, anti-tank rifle, MG, grenade, gas-defense, night patrol, reconnaissance and anti-aircraft training makes this considerably more interesting than a standard personnel or administrative document.
The locations appearing in the schedule include Marolla, Kreuzbergl and Kalmusbad, providing additional research possibilities connected with the Klagenfurt training area.
Condition
Original period document showing substantial service and storage wear. Pages exhibit age toning, staining/foxing, old folds and creases, edge and corner wear, small tears and losses, and areas of separation/wear along the horizontal folds. Original staple remains at the upper left. Numerous period handwritten notes and colored-pencil markings are present throughout.
Despite the wear, the typewritten text remains remarkably clear and readable. Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition and completeness.
