WW2 German 1942 KLV Lager Childrens Camp Tatra Lomnitz Cover Bochum School Nazi Eagle Swastika Seals

Original 1942 Third Reich Kinderlandverschickung (KLV) postal cover sent from Bochum, Germany, to Fritz Paschen at a KLV camp in Tatra-Lomnitz, Slovakia. The envelope is postmarked Bochum, 23 October 1942 and contains several particularly strong period markings.

The address reads in part:

The cover bears the purple school marking:

“Drusenbergschule
Volksschule für Jungen
Bochum”

At lower left is a large official “Geheime Staatspolizei – Staatspolizeileitstelle Dortmund” circular marking surrounding the Third Reich eagle and swastika. This identifies the Gestapo / Secret State Police headquarters in Dortmund.

Also present is the postal exemption marking:

“Frei durch Ablösung Reich”

meaning that postage was handled through an official Reich postal-payment arrangement rather than ordinary postage stamps.

The upper portion carries a red Bochum postal slogan cancel dated 26.10.42 promoting the Bochumer Stadtväter exhibition, together with an eagle meter impression. The envelope additionally retains remnants of red censored sealing tape along the left edge decorated with repeated swastika emblems.

The destination is historically significant. Tatra-Lomnitz (Tatranská Lomnica) in the High Tatras of Slovakia contained numerous KLV camps during WWII. Contemporary and philatelic records document a variety of numbered KLV camps and individual houses operating there.

The Kinderlandverschickung program relocated German schoolchildren from areas increasingly threatened by Allied bombing to camps in Germany and elsewhere in German-controlled or allied Europe. Contemporary accounts document hundreds of children being sent to the High Tatra region.
