WW2 German Albert Leo Schlageter Military War Memorial Königstein Photo Postcard

Original period German real-photo postcard (RPPC) showing the Schlageterdenkmal am Drei Königstein / Dreisessel in the Bavarian Forest.

The photograph provides an excellent full view of the unusual memorial incorporated into the massive natural rock formations of the Dreisessel area. A large commemorative plaque dedicated to Albert Leo Schlageter is clearly visible between the rocks, complete with Iron Cross motifs. Two visitors standing among the rocks provide an excellent sense of scale.

Other surviving period postcards identify this same site as the Schlageterdenkmal at the Dreisessel / Drei Königstein, confirming the location and subject. Examples dated to the 1930s and early 1940s are known.

Memorial Plaque

The prominent plaque begins:

“Dem deutschen Helden
Albert Leo
Schlageter”

Translation:

“To the German hero Albert Leo Schlageter.”

The lower inscription commemorates his execution by French forces on May 26, 1923.

Schlageter was executed by a French military court during the occupation of the Ruhr after being convicted for involvement in sabotage against the occupying forces. His death subsequently became heavily politicized, and he was turned into a nationalist martyr figure, particularly during the Third Reich period.
