Original two-document Third Reich-era correspondence grouping from Hamburg, dated June 10 and June 12, 1942, concerning the school records of Hans Martin Lüdicke and his attempt to continue his studies while serving on the Eastern Front (Ostfront).
The first document, dated 10 June 1942, was written by W. Lüdicke of Hamburg to the Oberrealschule auf der Uhlenhorst, Hamburg. He explains that his son, Hans Martin Lüdicke, attended the school from 1918–1930 and was currently serving as an Obergefreiter on the Eastern Front.
According to the letter, Hans Martin wished to study for several additional semesters in order to become a Diplomkaufmann (graduate business/economics qualification). For this purpose, he needed to submit various certificates and academic records. His original March 8, 1929 certificate for promotion to Obersekunda had apparently been lost.
The father therefore asks the school to issue a duplicate certificate, noting:
“Da mein Sohn seine Papiere bereits in aller Kürze einreichen soll…”
Translation: “Since my son must submit his papers very shortly…”
The letter closes with the period salutation “Heil Hitler!” and bears what appears to be the original handwritten signature of W. Lüdicke.
The second document is the school’s response dated 12 June 1942, headed:
“Oberschule für Jungen auf der Uhlenhorst – Abschrift”
It confirms that Hans-Martin left the school on 26 October 1931 with an Abgangszeugnis from the Unterprima level. The school explains that because only the final leaving certificates were retained, it no longer possessed the underlying records necessary to produce the specifically requested certificate for his promotion to Obersekunda.
However, the school states that the surviving leaving certificate clearly established that he must have completed Obersekunda and offers to provide a copy of the Abgangszeugnis for the prescribed fee of RM 3.
The response closes with the same period salutation and is identified:
“gez. Geertz i.V.
Oberstudiendirektor der Oberschule
auf der Uhlenhorst, Hamburg.”
Together these two documents provide an interesting snapshot of German civilian education and wartime bureaucracy, connecting a former Hamburg student then serving as an Obergefreiter on the Eastern Front with his efforts to prepare for further university/business studies.
Condition: Both original period documents show age toning and normal handling/storage wear. The June 10 letter has some edge wear and minor tears, while the school response remains quite clean overall. Typewritten text is clear and highly legible. Please see photographs for exact condition.
