WW2 Nazi German 1933 Deutschland Erwacht NSDAP Cigarette Card Album Book

Original 1933 German “Deutschland erwacht – Werden, Kampf und Sieg der NSDAP” cigarette-card collector album, published by Cigaretten-Bilderdienst, Altona-Bahrenfeld.

This example is complete with every single color and B&W tobacco cards inside, 275 cards total!

The title translates approximately as:

“Germany Awakens – The Rise, Struggle and Victory of the NSDAP.”

The album was produced as a large-format illustrated historical/propaganda work documenting the NSDAP’s early history and rise to power. The text was written by Wilfrid Bade, while the photographic material was selected and artistically prepared by Heinrich Hoffmann, the party’s official photographer. The binding and book decoration are credited inside to SS-Obersturmführer Felix Albrecht.

The album contains approximately 150 pages filled with period text, full-page portraits, documentary photographs and mounted cigarette-card images. The Library of Congress describes the 501–600 thousand printing as containing all 225 mounted color and black-and-white photographic cards, with additional color material appearing within the volume.

Subjects illustrated throughout include Adolf Hitler, the SA, early NSDAP leadership, the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch and its dead, political rallies and marches, memorial ceremonies, propaganda events, the 1933 German Turnfest, party formations, flags and standards, and numerous scenes documenting the movement during the early 1930s.

Several particularly impressive color photographic plates/cards remain present, including large rally scenes, marches and mass formations with period flags and uniforms. The photographs shown include material from events at Braunau, Coburg, Dresden, Oberstdorf, Munich and Stuttgart, among others.

The photographed pages also show the distinctive sections “Hitler und seine SA” and the memorial spread “Und ihr habt doch gesiegt!”, together with numerous large-format portraits and documentary photographs.

This example retains its original brown cloth hardcover with gold-colored embossed “Deutschland erwacht” lettering and portrait design. The covers show age-related wear, rubbing, spotting, discoloration and edge/corner wear as visible in the photographs. Interior pages show normal toning and age-related wear. Unfortunately the back pull out poster is torn and missing.

A substantial and visually impressive original 1933 Third Reich-era cigarette-card album, desirable as a period historical artifact and reference piece for collectors of German political history, cigarette-card albums, photography and ephemera.
