Original 1941 WHW Winterhilfswerk Invoice 2,000 Rohware Nr. 1 Pierrot Olbernhau

Description

Excellent original 1941 WHW Winterhilfswerk “Auftrag und Rechnung” (Order and Invoice) documenting the manufacture and finishing of 2,000 WHW pieces during the 1941/42 campaign.

The document is headed “WHW 1941/42” with the large eagle and swastika emblem and states:

“Im Namen des Winterhilfswerkes des Deutschen Volkes, Berlin, werden geliefert:”
Translation: “On behalf of the Winter Relief Organization of the German People, Berlin, the following are to be supplied:”

The specific order is:

“2000 Stück Rohware Nr. 1 – Pierrot –”
Translation: “2,000 pieces unfinished/raw goods No. 1 – Pierrot –”

The price is:

RM 12.64 per 1,000 pieces = RM 25.28 total

A particularly desirable feature is the original purple manufacturer’s stamp beneath “Stempel des Rohwarenherstellers” (Stamp of the raw-goods manufacturer):

RICHARD MATTHES
Inh. C. Matthes
Holzwarenfabrik
OLBERNHAU i. Sa.
Hüttenreihe 16

This identifies the raw pieces as having been manufactured by the Richard Matthes wooden-goods factory in Olbernhau, Saxony, an important center of the Erzgebirge wooden toy and folk-art industry.

The handwritten “an den Bemaler” (to the painter) entry appears to read:

Otto Brümmler / Brümmer
Kühnhaide

This records the craftsman or workshop to which the unfinished Pierrot pieces were sent for painting/finishing.

The document was paid on:

16 September 1941

by:

Check No. 75310

The lower-right section, “Bezahlt durch Verleger” (Paid by publisher/distributor), bears another strong purple stamp:

Julius Gläser
Holzspielwarenfabrik
Zöblitz/Erzgeb.

The left margin states:

“Bezahlung erfolgt nur gegen Rückgabe dieses Formulares”
Translation: “Payment will be made only upon return of this form.”

Additional handwritten administrative entries include Lot 126 and a field notation.

This is much more interesting than a generic WHW receipt because it documents the actual manufacturing chain of a specific WHW collectible—the No. 1 “Pierrot”—including a production run of 2,000 pieces, the raw-goods manufacturer, painter/finisher, distributor, production cost, payment date and check number.

A great piece of original primary-source material for researching how WHW wooden badges and figures were manufactured through the traditional Erzgebirge wood and toy industry.

Original period condition with expected handling wear, folds/creases, two filing holes along the left margin, handwritten entries and original factory stamps. Please examine all photographs for exact condition.
