Interesting item for the WHW collector! Original 1941 WHW Winterhilfswerk Order Invoice – 2,000 Tirolerin Wood Figures
Original WWII German Winterhilfswerk des Deutschen Volkes (WHW) order and invoice from the 1941/42 Winter Relief campaign, documenting the manufacture of 2,000 wooden “Tirolerin” figures.
The document features the German eagle and swastika above:
“WHW 1941/42 – Auftrag und Rechnung”
“WHW 1941/42 – Order and Invoice”
The introductory text reads:
“Im Namen des Winterhilfswerkes des Deutschen Volkes, Berlin, werden geliefert:”
“On behalf of the Winter Relief Organization of the German People, Berlin, the following are to be supplied:”
The Order
The principal entry reads:
“2000 Stück Rohware Nr. 10 – Tirolerin”
Translation:
“2,000 pieces unfinished/raw item No. 10 – Tyrolean Woman.”
The price was RM 13.43 per 1,000, giving a total of RM 26.86.
“Rohware” is significant here because it refers to the unfinished wooden pieces before painting/finishing, providing an interesting glimpse into how these WHW wooden collectibles were commercially produced.
Richard Matthes – Olbernhau Manufacturer
The upper-right section is specifically marked:
“Stempel des Rohwarenherstellers”
“Stamp of the manufacturer of the unfinished goods.”
It bears a clear purple manufacturer’s stamp:
RICHARD MATTHES
Inh. C. Matthes
Holzwarenfabrik
OLBERNHAU i. Sa.
Hüttenreihe 16
This identifies Richard Matthes of Olbernhau, Saxony, as the wooden-goods factory responsible for producing the unfinished pieces. Olbernhau is located in the Erzgebirge, a region internationally famous for its traditional wooden toys, figurines and decorative woodcraft.
The handwritten “an den Bemaler” section records the painter/finisher to whom the unfinished figures were sent, further documenting the production process from wooden manufacturer to decorator.
Payment & Distributor
The payment section appears to read:
“Bezahlt am: 16/9.41”
“Paid: September 16, 1941”
“durch Scheck Nr.: 75311”
“By check No. 75311.”
The lower-right corner carries another attractive period purple stamp:
Julius Gläser
engros Spielwaren Export
Zöblitz i. Erzgeb.
Translation:
“Julius Gläser – Wholesale Toy Export – Zöblitz in the Erzgebirge.”
The combination of Richard Matthes Holzwarenfabrik, the named painter/finisher, and Julius Gläser Spielwaren Export makes this a particularly interesting document because it helps illustrate the actual manufacturing and distribution chain behind these wartime WHW wooden figures.
The form additionally carries Lot 125 and retains its original handwritten accounting and production information.
The perforated left margin states:
“Bezahlung erfolgt nur gegen Rückgabe dieses Formulares”
“Payment will only be made upon return of this form.”
A great original piece of WHW, Erzgebirge wooden toy, German home-front and wartime economic history. Especially desirable for a specialized collection of Winterhilfswerk donation items, German wooden figures, period manufacturers, or Third Reich documents.
Condition: Very good original used condition with period handwriting and ink stamps, two punched filing holes, light creasing and normal age/storage wear. Manufacturer and Julius Gläser stamps remain nicely visible. Please inspect all photographs for exact condition.
Historical artifact offered for collecting, preservation, research and educational purposes.
