Original pre-WWII German photographic postcard featuring a striking image of five young lions at Carl Hagenbeck’s Tierpark in Hamburg-Stellingen.

The printed German caption reads:

“Carl Hagenbeck’s Tierpark, Hamburg-Stellingen – Löwinnen in der Löwenschlucht”

Translation:

“Carl Hagenbeck’s Animal Park, Hamburg-Stellingen – Lionesses in the Lion Gorge.”

The photograph shows five juvenile lions gathered together on the rocks of the zoo’s famous lion enclosure. Carl Hagenbeck’s Tierpark was internationally important in the development of modern zoological exhibits, particularly its pioneering use of open panoramic enclosures rather than traditional barred cages.

The reverse is dated Hamburg, March 29, 1938 and carries a green 6 Pfennig Paul von Hindenburg Deutsches Reich postage stamp, tied by a Hamburg postal cancellation.

Of additional interest is the large Third Reich-era slogan cancellation beside the stamp, incorporating an emblem and the wording “Deutsches Volk …”. This gives the card additional postal-history interest beyond the attractive zoo subject.
