Offered here is a fascinating original Third Reich era German illustrated shooting target (Schießscheibe) produced by the well-known Gustav Kühn firm of Neuruppin, Germany.
The circular target features a beautifully colored winter hunting scene depicting a fox attacking or carrying a pheasant in the snow, surrounded by evergreen trees and winter vegetation. Numerous original bullet/pellet holes are scattered across the target, providing unmistakable evidence of its actual use as a shooting target.
Printed along the lower edge is:
“Gustav Kühn, Neuruppin.”
Gustav Kühn’s Neuruppin printing establishment became famous for its colorful lithographic Bilderbogen, but the company also operated a Schießscheibenfabrik (shooting-target factory). Museum collections document Gustav Kühn targets produced as colored lithographs, making these an interesting crossover between German shooting culture, hunting history, and Neuruppin printing history.
The reverse retains an old handwritten German inscription, including what appears to be the date “11.4.38”, strongly suggesting this particular target was used on April 11, 1938. Additional handwritten names/notations are present on both the front and reverse. I would leave these completely intact, as they are part of the target’s history.
The Gustav Kühn company continued operating well beyond the lifetime of its namesake; surviving company material confirms that the firm’s shooting-target and forms operation was still active during the WWII period. A surviving 1941/42 Gustav Kühn Scheibenfabrik price list even advertises shooting targets and shooting supplies.
Details: Original German shooting target; Gustav Kühn, Neuruppin manufacturer; fox and pheasant hunting scene; circular heavy paper/card construction; period handwritten markings; dated 11 April 1938 on reverse; numerous period shooting holes; attractive multicolor printed artwork.
Condition: Displays substantial authentic use, including numerous projectile holes, edge losses, small tears, surface wear, handwriting and age-related discoloration. These imperfections are consistent with an actual period-used shooting target and add considerable character. Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition.
An unusual surviving piece of 1930s German hunting and shooting history, particularly desirable because it retains both the manufacturer’s imprint and a period handwritten date.
