Offered here is an interesting original 1939 German insurance document grouping of three pieces, all belonging to Johann Neuhaus of Brühl-Kierberg and issued by the Deutsche Sachversicherung Aktiengesellschaft of Hamburg. An awesome little collection for the motorcycle enthusiast!
What makes this grouping especially appealing is that the documents remain together and relate to the same individual and his motorcycle, giving a small but unusually complete glimpse into civilian vehicle ownership, insurance and accident-claim administration in Germany immediately before the outbreak of WWII.
Included in the Group
1. March 1939 Motorcycle Liability Insurance Premium Invoice
An original Haftpflicht-Versicherung / Prämien-Rechnung (liability insurance premium invoice), issued in Hamburg in March 1939.
It identifies:
- Johann Neuhaus
- Brühl-Kierberg
- Margaretenstraße 24
- Insured property: “Motorrad über 200 ccm” — Motorcycle over 200cc
- Premium: 20.60 RM
- Fee: 0.20 RM
- Tax: 1.05 RM
- Total: 21.85 Reichsmarks
The document carries period signatures and a purple Volksfürsorge Lebensversicherungs-Aktiengesellschaft, Bezirksdirektion Köln marking. It is additionally dated 1 March 1939 and bears a handwritten receipt notation.
2. September 1939 Motorcycle Liability Insurance Premium Invoice
A second matching Deutsche Sachversicherung liability insurance premium invoice for Neuhaus’s motorcycle over 200cc, this time issued in September 1939.
It carries the same policy information and 21.85 RM total, along with period signatures, Volksfürsorge marking and a handwritten payment receipt dated 17 September 1939.
This document is especially interesting historically as it dates from September 1939, the opening month of WWII in Europe.
3. June 6, 1939 Accident / Insurance Settlement Letter
The third document is a larger Deutsche Sachversicherung Aktiengesellschaft letterhead document dated 6 June 1939, addressed directly to Johann Neuhaus.
It comes from the company’s:
“Abt.: Unfall- und Haftpflicht-Versicherung”
Accident and Liability Insurance Department
and references a claim identified as:
“AHS 72 120/39 Reichsbahn/Neuhaus”
The German text states that Neuhaus’s compensation claims concerning the referenced damage case had been settled and records the company’s total expenditure as:
RM 38.63
The central portion translates approximately as:
“We have settled the compensation claims made by you in the above-mentioned damage matter. Our total expenditures amount to RM 38.63. We hope to have settled the matter to your satisfaction.”
The letter concludes with the period political salutation “Heil Hitler!” followed by Deutsche Sachversicherung Aktiengesellschaft and multiple original signatures.
The reference to “Reichsbahn/Neuhaus” makes this document particularly interesting, apparently connecting the insurance claim involving Neuhaus with the German national railway system.
Historical Interest
Together, these three documents form a cohesive prewar/early-war German civilian insurance grouping rather than three unrelated pieces of paperwork. All are connected to Johann Neuhaus, and the two premium invoices specifically identify his insured vehicle as a motorcycle exceeding 200cc.
The March and September premium documents effectively bracket the June 1939 claim settlement, creating an interesting chronological group from a single year.
The documents also feature attractive period typography, company insignia, numerous original signatures and stamps, Reichsmark amounts, Volksfürsorge markings and the political closing appearing on the June correspondence.
Excellent material for a collection focusing on 1930s German documents, motorcycles, insurance history, Reichsmark-era financial paperwork, civilian life, transportation, or Third Reich ephemera.
Condition
All three are in original period-used condition with expected folds, handling wear, age toning, minor staining/foxing and edge/corner wear. The paperwork remains quite presentable and the principal information is readily legible.
All three original documents pictured are included and are being offered together as one grouping.
