Original WWI German military Feldpost postcard, mailed in 1916, featuring a colorful multi-view of Mława, then in Russian Poland and occupied by German forces during World War I.
The front is headed:
“Deutscher Gruss aus Russland”
Translation: “German Greetings from Russia.”
The postcard has several fascinating views of Mława, including Plockerstrasse, the area in front of the church, the marketplace, a military waiting hall, and a street specifically captioned “Judenviertel” — “Jewish Quarter.”
At left is a portrait of Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, identified as:
“Marschall v. Hindenburg – der siegreiche Führer der Deutschen”
Approximately: “Field Marshal von Hindenburg – the victorious leader of the Germans.”
The card also incorporates the Imperial German colors and an Iron Cross dated 1914.
Of particular military interest, the reverse bears a strong circular K.D. Feldpostexpedition cancellation dated October 9, 1916, associated with the 42nd Infantry Division. This gives the postcard a definite WWI field-post connection rather than simply being an unused patriotic souvenir.
It is addressed to Herrn Adolf Grosskopf, at Landesche Anstalt in Sasbach, Amt Achern.
Handwritten Message – Partial Translation
The writing is difficult German cursive, but the message is dated:
“6.X.16” — October 6, 1916
The opening appears to read approximately:
“Mein l. Adolf!”
“My dear Adolf!”
The following lines appear to include:
“Empfange lieben Dank für deine Gratulation …”
Approximately: “Many thanks for your congratulations …”
The remainder consists primarily of personal greetings and correspondence. Some words are difficult to decipher confidently, so I would not advertise it as a complete word-for-word translation.
This is an especially interesting postcard because it combines WWI Feldpost usage, German-occupied Mława, Hindenburg, the 42nd Infantry Division, an Iron Cross motif, and a specifically identified Jewish Quarter in a single period card.
Published by J. Chemal, Posen, from an original photograph by Dom Grossen Generalstab. Card number Tx 6699.
