WWI 1916 Karlsbad Austria Postcard Sprudel Colonnade Censored Mail to Bulgaria

Original World War I-era postcard from Karlsbad, Austria-Hungary, today Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic, featuring an excellent interior view of the famous Sprudel-Kolonnade (Hot Spring Colonnade).

The printed caption reads:

“KARLSBAD. — Inneres der Sprudel-Kolonnade.”

Translation:

“Karlsbad — Interior of the Hot Spring Colonnade.”

The image shows the elaborate iron-and-glass interior of the historic spa colonnade with visitors seated along the promenade, large windows, ornamental columns, hanging lights and tropical plants. This structure was an important part of Karlsbad’s internationally famous spa district.

Postal History

The reverse is especially interesting. It is postally used during WWI, apparently dated November 1916, and was mailed internationally from Karlsbad, Austria-Hungary to Sofia, Bulgaria.

It is addressed in Cyrillic to a woman in Sofia, Bulgaria, with a lengthy handwritten message also written in Cyrillic.

The card bears an Austrian 10 Heller Emperor Franz Joseph I postage stamp, tied by a Karlsbad postmark. Additional red postal/censorship markings are present across the correspondence and address sides.

The combination of Austria-Hungary → Bulgaria wartime international mail is particularly interesting because both countries were members of the Central Powers during WWI.

Message

The handwritten correspondence appears to be in Bulgarian written in Cyrillic. It begins with an affectionate greeting approximately equivalent to:

“Dear friend…”

The writer discusses personal matters and apparently their stay/travels. Portions are difficult to decipher confidently because of the cursive handwriting and the postal markings running directly through the text.

At the bottom the sender has written:

“Deutsch-Österreich, Weissen / Karlsbad-Österreich”

or similar wording identifying the Karlsbad/Austrian location.
